Background and experience

An AI tool can be accurate and still go unused if clinicians don't trust it. Relying on it blindly is also a risk. My research is on trust calibration: matching trust to how reliable a tool actually is.

I study this in mental health referrals in Norway, where many cases fall in a grey zone that no guideline settles. I look at both sides of the referral, the GPs who refer and the specialists who assess. Using design science, I start from how clinicians reason and decide, then design and build decision support that fits.

The work has produced a cognitive framework for trust calibration, a map of trust-critical decision points in the referral workflow, and design requirements and principles. It has been published at peer-reviewed conferences including HICSS, AMCIS and MCIS. Together, it adds up to design knowledge for tools, AI included, that clinicians can rely on and know when to question.

I'd be glad to hear from clinicians, researchers and developers interested in this work.
