Research points to the importance of a more practice-oriented approach to pedagogical development courses in higher education. In this article, we ask: How are examples of quality teaching expressed by participants in a pedagogical development course and how do they perceive them as meaningful? Employing an ethnographic research design, the study draws on empirical data from seventeen semi-structured interviews, eighteen individual written assignments and fieldnotes from participant observation throughout the course. By using Bildung-centered general didactics and andragogy as a theoretical lens, the results indicate that quality teaching is a matter of (1) selecting the content, (2) exploring the content, and (3) establishing presence and dialogue. These examples are perceived as meaningful because they provide concrete, practice-oriented approaches for restraining and interpreting the content, drawing on prior experiences, and fostering shared and exploratory learning environments. The study argues that Bildung-centered general didactics and andragogy function as a translator between university teachers’ existing understandings of teaching and knowledge, thereby supporting their professional development. Based on the results, the paper outlines recommendations for enhancing professional development courses to better support university teachers’ ongoing professional development.

Navigating Ethical Challenges in Peer Observation of Teaching in Higher Education.

In higher education, Peer Observation of Teaching (PoT) seeks to enhance awareness of teaching, and to support the development of teaching practices through constructive feedback among peers. Research on PoT indicates that feedback from observers (peers) tends to be overly positive and supportive, which may limit opportunities for critical reflection (for example, Bell, 2001; Donnelly, 2007). Moreover, studies suggest that the learning potential lies in observing peers` teaching, rather than in receiving feedback from the observer (for example, Bell et al., 2010; Hendry et al., 2021; Tenenberg, 2016). This study explores the relational ethical challenges that are actualized when peers give feedback on one another’s teaching within the context of a university pedagogy course. In the study, concepts of The Ethical Demand by Knud E. Løgstrup were used to understand the observers' experiences of giving feedback (Løgstrup, 2010). The study employed an ethnographic research design (Fetterman, 2010). The empirical material consists of seventeen interviews, document analysis of eighteen individual written assignments regarding implementation of PoT, and fieldnotes from the researcher’s role as a participant observer (Fangen, 2020). The analysis reveals key relational ethical challenges that arise when the observer gives feedback on peers' teaching. The results indicate that The Ethical Demand takes precedence over the enhancement of teaching practice. This reflects a stronger emphasis on the relational dynamics and vulnerability experienced by peers in the moment of teaching, rather than on pedagogical improvement of teaching practice alone. The relevance of this study to Nordic educational research lies in its contribution to understanding why peers tend to prioritize positive, rather than more critical or constructive, feedback in the context of PoT. The Ethical Demand highlighted in the study underscore the persistent presence of ethical obligations in all human encounters. This insight is particularly relevant in the context of PoT in higher education, where professional development is inseparable from the ethical and relational dimensions of collegial interaction.
