  Sentence reading involves constant competition between lexical candidates. Previous research with monolinguals has shown that the neighbours of a read word are inhibited, making their retrieval as a subsequent target more difficult, but the duration of this interference may depend on reading skills. In this study, we examined neighbour priming effects in sentence reading among proficient Norwegian–English bilinguals reading in their L2. We investigated the effects of the distance between prime and target (short vs. long) and the nature of the overlap between the two words (beginning or end), and related these to differences in individual cognitive skills. Our results replicated the inhibition effects found in monolinguals, albeit slightly delayed. Interference between form-related words was affected by the L2 reading skills and, crucially, by the phonological decoding abilities of the bilingual reader. We discuss the results in light of competition models of bilingual reading as well as episodic memory accounts.

  The rapid development of artificial intelligence and the implementation of the European AI Act create a pressing need for universities to raise AI literacy among researchers, educators, and administrative staff. Academic libraries can act as catalysts in this process by providing training, infrastructure, and services that help the entire university community understand and apply AI in meaningful ways. The focus is on skill building and capacity development to ensure that AI becomes a tool for advancing research, teaching, and administration. Ethical use and awareness of potential risks remain important guiding principles, but the primary challenge lies in equipping staff and faculty with the competence to use AI effectively.

  Upresise kategorier rundt språklige ferdigheter er med på å skape uklare grenser for hvilke pedagogiske tiltak som skal settes i verk. Flerspråklighet benyttes ofte kun om elever som ikke har norsk som morsmål, men i realiteten er alle norske elever flerspråklige. Vi skiller mellom elevengruppen som er flerspråklige (alle elever) og elever som er "annetspråklærende". Den siste gruppen skal tilegne seg kunnskap på et annet språk enn det språket de snakker i familien sin.

  Forskning på generativ kunstig intelligens (GenKI) i språk- og utdanningsfeltet har vokst raskt de siste årene. Feltet ser imidlertid i stor grad ut til å være dominert av engelskspråklige publikasjoner. Skandinaviske bidrag er ofte publisert på engelsk og dermed tilpasset internasjonale diskurser. Dette skaper en spenning mellom globale og lokale stemmer, og reiser spørsmål om hvordan både innhold (tema, problemstillinger, metodiske valg) og form (språk, terminologi, diskurs) påvirkes av publikasjonens språklige og kulturelle kontekst. I dette bidraget presenterer vi en pågående kartlegging av nyere forskning i skjæringspunktet mellom GenKI, språk og utdanning, med særlig vekt på flerspråklighet. Vi ønsker å undersøke hvilke forskjeller som kan identifiseres mellom skandinaviske bidrag skrevet på henholdsvis engelsk og skandinaviske språk, både når det gjelder hvordan GenKI omtales, hvilke utdanningsmessige utfordringer og muligheter som løftes fram, og hvordan språkvalg og sjangerkonvensjoner former forskningsdiskursen. Arbeidet plasseres innenfor en sosialsemiotisk ramme der språk forstås som ressurs for meningsskaping, og hvor valg av språk og terminologi ses som ideologiske handlinger. En sentral utfordring er at den engelskspråklige dominansen ytterligere bidrar til å øke statusen til engelsk, slik at skandinaviske språk og oppmerksomheten rundt mindre språk og språklig mangfold reduseres. Slik oppstår en selvforsterkende effekt hvor både forskningsspråk og selve grunnlaget for den teknologiske utviklingen av språkmodeller bidrar til å marginalisere lokale stemmer. Vi ønsker gjennom dette bidraget ønsker å åpne for en diskusjon om hvordan skandinavisk forskning kan gjøres synlig og relevant i et internasjonalt forskningsfelt, og hvordan dette kan styrke både begrepsutvikling, undervisning og demokratisk deltakelse i Norden anno 2025.

  This thesis investigates multilingualism and effects of background profile in young Norwegian learners of English. A study is reported which takes a large-scale individual differences approach. 580 participants in years 6-8 of primary and lower secondary school took part. 383 participants used Norwegian as their only home language (NO users), and 197 used other additional home languages (OA users). Using a questionnaire designed for the study, participants reported on their knowledge and usage of languages, as well as attitudes to languages and language learning. Participants further completed a novel morphosyntactic test which used error spotting and sentence completion to test five key aspects of English morphosyntax; subject-verb agreement, aspect, word order, use of prepositions and definiteness marking. Results show that OA users know more languages and use them to a greater extent in daily situations than NO users. Their attitudes to their individual languages, particularly to their home languages are more positive than those of NO users. Principal components analyses revealed differences between the two groups. NO users consider language skills as important for academic and professional purposes, whereas OA users emphasise the social and societal purposes of language and show more interest in language learning. Error rates for error spotting and sentence completion were generally high, and similar for both groups. The self-rated English proficiency of NO users significantly predicted performance for both task types but did not for OA users. Significant effects of open-mindedness were observed in both groups such that greater open mindedness predicted better performance in language tasks. Morphosyntactic transfer was investigated in three subgroups of participants, L1 speakers of Norwegian, Arabic and Slavic and Baltic languages, respectively. Divergent patterns of errors traceable to L1 structure were observed in each group in the sentence completion task. Overall, the findings of this thesis show that differences between NO and OA can be observed in degree of multilingualism and OA users’ higher degree of personal experience with the benefits. Differences on a metalinguistic level can be seen in NO users’ more accurate self-ratings of their own ability. Command of English morphosyntax was also influenced by L1 background in the sense that although error rate did not vary considerably between groups, the frequency of error types did. The results have several implications for language teaching. As participants generally expressed high motivation for learning, the study shows the importance of understanding and using learners’ L1 backgrounds in language teaching and learning in order to increase metalinguistic awareness and understanding of linguistic structure.
