The witch is one of cultural history’s most fascinating outsiders. Over the centuries, she has been portrayed as dangerous, free, mysterious and threatening, but also as a symbol of resistance to established norms and power structures.
Professor of History Camilla Mørk Røstvik explores the figure of the witch in history and popular culture, examining how ideas about witches have become linked to gender, sexuality and queer experiences.
After the talk, the conversation continues with the audience. Together, we will explore how past narratives about “the others” may still shape our ideas about gender, identity and belonging today.
- Why has the witch become a symbol for so many who challenge society’s norms?
- Who has been branded dangerous or different throughout history?
- And what can the history of witches teach us about gender, identity and belonging today?
Welcome to an evening of history, power, identity and the magic of challenging norms.
The event is free and is a collaboration between UiA – Centre for Gender and Equality and SKAKK – Queer Culture in Kristiansand, a subgroup of FRI Agder.
