Gender Queer: Stories Under Pressure – Conversation with Maia Kobabe

Maia Kobabe is the author and illustrator of the graphic memoir Gender Queer: A Memoir – the most censored book in the United States in recent years. UiA – Centre for Gender and Equality invites you to a conversation about what the censorship of queer literature can tell us about our contemporary society.

Gender Queer has faced strong opposition, while also receiving widespread recognition for its honest and innovative approach. In 2024, the book was temporarily removed from a school library in Arendal following complaints, before the decision was reversed. The case sparked public debate and raised questions about freedom of expression, professional responsibility in libraries, and the import of American “culture war” conflicts into Norway.

At UiA – Centre for Gender and Equality, we are inviting Maia Kobabe because Gender Queer has become an important reference point in contemporary discussions about identity, representation and the significance of literature for young people.

Through Kobabe’s personal and innovative work, they have helped expand the language available for experiences that are often underrepresented in public discourse. Kobabe’s work provides an important starting point for reflecting on how stories can create recognition, understanding and a sense of belonging – and the role literature plays in a diverse democracy.

We have worked closely with Måltrost Forlag to make this event possible, and the event will be part of Kobabe’s tour of Norway.
