Gardens, Poetry, and Belonging, Queer Pasts and Futures

How can gardens function as queer spaces? This session explores the connections between modernist poetry, garden culture, and queer communities.

Can a garden be a queer space? A place for community, care and resistance? We explore what poetry, garden culture and queer communities can tell us about alternative ways of living together. Photo: Colourbox

Drawing on research into queer garden societies, we will consider how poems and narratives can illuminate alternative ways of living together, and how gardens can serve as spaces of belonging, care, and resistance.

We will also open up a discussion about what it means to conduct research on queer topics in the United States today, at a time of growing political tensions surrounding gender, sexuality, and academic freedom.
