About N-ICNP

We work in line with the national e-health strategy, where one of the goals is "increased standardization, where collaboration is primarily based on relevant international standards, coding systems, and terminology, with necessary national adaptations."

ICNP is a terminology used to record and document observations and interventions by nurses worldwide. ICNP provides a framework for sharing and reusing nursing data and for comparing nursing practices across different settings.

ICNP contributes to

  • ensuring that nurses have the information tools they need to meet patients' changing health and care needs
  • improving practice and supporting the development of national information standards
  • supporting both general and specialized nursing practices across different settings
  • ensuring that nursing contributions are accurately captured in resource management systems
  • supporting evidence-based practice
  • bringing together various nursing terminologies

Under an agreement with the International Council of Nurses (ICN), SNOMED International (external link) now manages, produces, publishes, and distributes ICNP as part of SNOMED CT (external link), the most comprehensive clinical health terminology in use worldwide. ICN continues to retain ownership and define the content of ICNP while enabling the terminology to reach many more potential nurse users.
