Guidelines for compulsory attendance at UiA

  1. Requirements for compulsory attendance must be stated in the study programme plan and/or course description, cf. Section 12b (2) of the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at UiA (pdf).
  2. Written information about attendance requirements and potential use of digital attendance registration must be provided at the start of the course.
  3. The university has a particular responsibility to ensure that student representatives who have concurrent obligations such as compulsory class attendance and meetings of boards, councils and committees at UiA and STA, are given the opportunity to make up for any absences.
  4. In general, the following applies:
  1. The absence rate is calculated on scheduled teaching. If the scheduled class is cancelled, all students will have their attendance approved.
  2. Students must accept that the time of the class can be moved, but notification of such a change must be given at least one week in advance. If this deadline is not met, students who are not able to participate will have their attendance approved.
  3. The student is responsible for monitoring their own attendance, and must be aware of when they are approaching the limit for absences.
  4. Students whose absence exceeds the permitted limit for absences may, in the event of documented illness or in other special cases, apply for exemption pursuant to Section 41 (6) of the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at UiA.
  5. It is considered cheating if a student has been wrongly approved for participation in compulsory teaching, cf. Section 31 (2) of the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations. A possible consequence of cheating is an annulment of exams and expulsion, cf. Section 12-4 of the Universities and University Colleges Act (in Norwegian).
  1. In courses where digital attendance registration is used, the following also applies:
  1. The student is responsible for registering his/her attendance, including de-registering if the student has to leave the class after registering.
  2. If a student has not been able to register his/her attendance, it is the student's responsibility to ask the lecturer to be retroactively registered by the end of the teaching session (class) which is underway. If the student does not notify the lecturer by the deadline at the end of class, attendance will not be registered afterwards.
