Areas of responsibility

A curiosity driven person and always looking for the next challenge! By training, I am a computer and control systems engineer. I have over 20 years of combined experience between industry and academia. I hold both a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Systems Engineering from Baghdad University, College of Engineering (1999 & 2002 respectively); with focus on design and development of SCADA systems for electrical energy sector. Furthermore, I hold a M.A.Sc. in Technology Innovation Management (TIM) from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada (in 2010); with focus on open source platforms for real-time communications and collaboration. In 2016, I obtained my PhD title from LaSalle Ramon Llull University in Barcelona Spain, in Electronic and Information Systems Engineering with specialization in coordination and communication methods (technologies and procedures) for disaster response operations.

Throughout my career, I have maintained a balance between practice and academia. I held several managerial & development positions where I was engaged in activities supporting or leading: hi-tech start-ups in Ontario, Canada; engineering teams at Cisco in San Jose, CA, USA; and developer teams for web-conferencing service providers in Ottawa, ON, Canada. Such engagements contributed hugely to my practical knowledge on Web 2.0 technologies, client-server systems architecture / deployments, back-end software development, back-end/front-end systems' security (port/network configurations, user authentication, database servers, etc.), real-time collaboration and communications systems. In addition, I developed experience in managing software product development following methods and practices such as SCRUM, continuous integration, test driven development, quality assurance and product release management.

Since Autumn of 2016, I have been working in Norway at CIEM- Center for Integrated Emergency Management at University of Agder (UiA), where I carried out research and teaching activities related to integrating new technologies in disaster management, cybersecurity incident managment. I also joined NORCE Norwegian Research Center (previously Teknova) as a Senior Researcher in 2018,where I work with new methods for advanced condition based monitoring for industrial applications (e.g. electricity distribution grid, agriculture, oil & gas offshore installations). These activities constantly involved consideration of using new and emerging technologies in designing and developing real-time systems. In addition to research and project management work, I have led and coordinated several project proposals targeting European Union and Norwegian Research Council funding opportunities.
