Areas of responsibility

Arne Isaksen is Professor at the Department of Working Life and Innovation at the School of Business and Law at the University of Agder. He holds a Dr. Polit. in Social Geography from the University of Oslo.

Isaksen has an extensive collection of international publications and a significant number of citations. He is published in reputable journals in the field of Economic Geography and Regional Development, includingRegional Studies, Journal of Economic Geography, Entrepreneurship & Regional DevelopmentvandvEconomic Geography. Isaksen has co-edited and authored six academic books for Norwegian publishing houses, one book for a Nordic publishing house and three for an English publishing house. He is chief editor of the Norwegian Journal of Geography/Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift.

Isaksen has been employed at the University of Agder since 2000, where he has served as Head of Department and Study Coordinator for the master program for Industrial Economics. Before joining UiA, Isaksen was a researcher in Agderforskning and the STEP Group.

Today, Isaksen has had frequent contact with policy makers, especially in  Agder county council and The Research Council of Norway. He is often invited to speak at seminars and workshops related to regional industrial development, innovation and innovation policy.

Isaksen has previously led a major project in a Research Councils Program for regional research and development and innovation (2011-2016). The project included several Norwegian and foreign research institutions, and led, among other things, to two Norwegian academic books and a special issue in the journal European Planning Studies. Isaksen is, from 2018 to 2019, leading a project about 'Restructuring og industry and public sector in Agder through service innovations based on digital teknology' for tthe Regional Research Fund Agder. He leads from 2020 a five year project on 'Innovation policy for grand societal challenges' financed by Aust-Agder Development and Competence Fund and which aims to strengthen the innnovation research at the Department of Working Life and Innnovation.

Research

Academic interests

Isaksen’s research if focused on regional industrial development and innovation. More specifically, Isaksen explores how industries emerge and develop in different geographical areas, how companies are incorporated and supported by regional clusters and innovation systems, and what promotes innovation in firms and industrial environments. Most of his research is theoretically based case studies, which aim to develop concepts and theories that contribute to a better understanding of different aspects of regional development and innovation.

Isaksen lectures these courses at the Master's Program in Innovation and Knowledge Development:

In addition, he supervises PhD students and master's students who write their master's thesis.
