  Purpose: The concept of recovery is commonly described as multifaceted and contested in the field of mental health and substance abuse. The aim of this study is to explore how understandings of recovery and recovery orientation of services are developed through daily practices and collaboration between service users and professionals. Methods: Eight pairs of participants were interviewed together, in accordance with the dyadic interview method. The dyads/pairs consisted of service users and professional helpers. A collaborative hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis was used to analyse data. Results: Data were analysed into three overarching and entangled themes, exploring how recovery-oriented collaboration and knowledge encompasses (a) recovery as relational pro-cesses. These processes are entangled with (b) recovery as situated in time and place. Furthermore, relational processes and dimensions of time and place are situated in and supported or hindered by (c) recovery orientation as part of the municipal policies, understood as the regulations, frameworks and decisions guiding mental health and substance abuse services in the municipality. Conclusions: The further development of recovery-oriented services should focus on facilitating openended and flexible ways of developing practices and relationships. This involves recognizing how relationships contribute to the development of knowledge and practices.

  This paper points out some problematic aspects of qualitative research based on interviews and uses examples from mental health. The narrative approach is explored while inquiring if the reality of life here is forced into the formula of a chronological story. The hermeneutic approach, in general, is also examined, and we ask if the reality of life in this scenario becomes caught up in a web of interpretations. Inspired by ideas from Bakhtin and phenomenology, we argue for interview-based research that stays with unresolvedness and constantly question the web of interpretations and narratives that determine our experiences. This also chimes with certain dialogical practices in mental health in which tolerance of uncertainty is the guiding principle. Concludingly, we suggest that interview-based research could be a practice of ‘un-resolving’ in which researchers, together with the participants, look for cracks, contradictions, and complexities to prevent the qualitative fallacies of well-organized meanings and well-composed stories.

  Brukarnas erfarenhetsbaserade kunskap har länge tystats ner eller omtolkats enligt de professionellas teorier. Idag bygger en växande forskning på en acceptans av deras erfarenheter. Finns det då inte en risk att berättelserna nu bygger upp ett nytt mönster för vad som kan berättas? I artikeln analyseras ett utdrag ur en intervju om en vändpunkt i en recoveryprocess. Vad som framstår som ohörsamhet och maktutövande från personalen uppfattas i intervjun som tecken på en djupare förståelse. Slutsatsen är behovet av att acceptera avvikande berättelser och hålla samma kritiska distans till brukarnas berättelser, som till professionellas och myndigheternas.

  Artikkelen utforsker betydningen av «små ting» i livene til mennesker med psykiske vansker. Utgangspunktet er et intervju der en mann fortalte om et vendepunkt i sin bedringsprosess. En ansatt ved en psykiatrisk sengepost lot han ikke være i fred og provoserte frem ulike responser hos han. Intervjuet utforskes gjennom en fenomenologisk og hermeneutisk «rund-dans» mellom mannens beskrivelser, de inntrykk det gjorde på oss når vi leste dem og ideer fra litteraturen. Vi foreslår at det mannen beskriver kan forstås som et «comeback til sosial responsivitet» og et «etisk-politisk jeg» som trer frem. «Jeg-et» som etikken og politikken er avhengig av står i fare for å forsvinne i psykisk helsearbeid, både i personsentrerte og sosialt orienterte praksiser.

  Humans do not live in a void, but are interwoven with places, rooms, objects, and people. The article investigates how material surroundings are a part of a person’s recovery history. One qualitative interview was analyzed by assemblage theory to clarify the connections and forces between materiality (the non-human) and people (the human). The recovery history has no specific starting point, but shows how the person is moving back and forth between de- and reterritorialization. He is seeking out new and unknown places and people which represent a route towards recovery, and at the same time he returns to a well-known life as a patient. Recovery is a back-and-forth process which implies the importance of preparing for the possibility of moving between the known and unknown state.

  Objective: Recently, the position of persons with mental health and drug problems has evolved from victim of an illness to holder of an experience-based knowledge (EBK). Studies about recovery are often based on recovery narratives. However, focusing on components of the recovery process—parts of this EBK concerned with the causes, onset, and journey before the proper recovery process—risks forming a blind spot. In this study, we aim to analyze service users’ EBK about recovery, the backgrounds and causes of the problems, and how they related these conditions to their recovery journey. Research Design and Methods: We interviewed 29 persons in recovery. Data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. Results: We found that a childhood characterized by violence and abuse reoccurred in the stories. The child’s situation was not addressed by schools, social agencies, or neighbours, creating an experience of social isolation and invisibility. Mental health distress and drug abuse were described as ways of managing these situations, until these became problems in themselves. The recovery journey started in a situation of despair and with a decision to stop using the developed threat response. For many, this meant going back to a situation of loneliness and invisibility before finding places and people and allowing experiences of being part of a positive context where they could also contribute. Conclusions: There is a risk of a blind spot in recovery research. EBK should be used to develop recovery-oriented services and also preventive interventions directed toward the social and psychological conditions in which children are raised.

  Denne artikkelen utforsker, fra tjenestebrukeres perspektiv, hvordan profesjonelle relasjoner kan være til hjelp i bofellesskap for mennesker med alvorlige psykiske problemer og/eller rusproblemer. Beboere ble intervjuet individuelt om sin relasjon til en selvvalgt ansatt, innholdet i hjelpen fra denne ansatte og hvordan denne hjelpen påvirket beboerens liv. Ved å bruke tematisk analyse fant vi at beboerne beskrev gjensidige relasjoner som lignet på vennskap og at hjelpsomme ansatte utførte en rekke handlinger. Vi fant fire ulike typer handlinger; små menneskelige gester, initiativ til og gjennomføring av sosiale aktiviteter, hjelp til selvhjelp og kamp på vegne av beboerne for å sikre rettighetene deres. For noen av beboerne hadde disse handlingene livsforvandlende effekt. Vi anbefaler at man ved fordeling av primærkontakter innen psykisk helsearbeid tilrettelegger for muligheter til å utvikle vennskapslignende relasjoner og at det gis rom for at ansatte kan utføre et mangfold av handlinger utfra tjenestebrukernes erfarte behov. This article explores how professional relationships may be helpful from the perspective of residents in community-based staffed supportive housing for individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) and/or drug abuse. Residents were individually interviewed about a relationship with a self-chosen staff member, the content of the help provided by this staff member and how this help influenced their lives. Using thematic analysis, we found that the residents described mutual relationships that resembled friendships and helpful staff members who carried out a variety of doings. Four domains of doings were identified: small human gestures, filling the hours with ‘friendship’, enabling the residents to take care of their own needs and fighting on behalf of the residents to ensure rights and benefits. To some of the residents, these doings had life-changing impact. We propose that mental health service management should facilitate friendship resemblance when matching professionals and service users, and we warn against a pitfall were present ‘recovery ideals’, such as independency, contradict the idea of helping by doing.
