We start this course with describing two major challenges in the contemporary world: (i) degradation of the earth’s ecosystem including climate change and (ii) inequality. Then we ask the question: How did we end up here? We trace the historical roots of capitalism and finance and provide the students with the knowledge to better understand current sustainability challenges in economics and business. In the second half of the course, the main goal is to investigate how businesses can contribute to solving these global challenges. Key topics are environmental economics, regulations, circular economy, responsible investments, and sustainable innovation.
