Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to analyze, discuss and describe:
what an organization is and why organizations are so pervasive in modern society
key elements of organizations and their environment
internal and external control
basic aspects of organizational change: driving forces, content and magnitude, context, and process
basic strategies of change and assess suitable strategies of change in different contexts
Identify key aspects of the relationship between digitalization, information technology and the organization
Give an account of how information systems can help rationalize and change organizations
Course contents
The course provides an introduction to central organizational theory concepts regarding i) formal characteristics, including structure, goals and strategy, ii) informal characteristics, including organizational culture and power relationships, iii) the relationship of the organization with its environment, and the iv) transformative and mediating role of information technology and digitalization on the management of the internal and external environment.
Teaching methods
The course is organized with a mixture of lectures and digital teaching activities. Estimated workload is 6.5 hours per week per student.
Assessment methods and criteria
3-hours individual written exam that counts 100% of the total grade. Grades A-F.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
