Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student has

  • some basic knowledge of English grammar and morphology
  • awareness of different aspects of the use of words and constructions (style, collocations, idioms etc.)
  • acquired knowledge and understanding of different text types and genres, textual structures, and stylistic levels
  • familiarity with the fundamental principles of academic writing in English
  • knowledge about the history of the English language
  • familiarity with different standards of English
  • awareness of language technology and its use in the production of written texts

Upon completion of the course, the student can

  • use English grammatical conventions in their texts
  • write different text types that conform to genre and register expectations
  • develop an independent thesis or research question of sufficient complexity
  • use and evaluate source material and integrate quotations
  • structure paragraphs including topic and support sentences
  • link paragraphs together into a coherent and focused academic essay
  • document and cite sources used in their texts

Course contents

This course will focus on practical use and understanding of grammar as well as academic writing. Students will learn about vocabulary and the structure of sentences and paragraphs. They will also learn how to develop and support an argument, how to achieve coherence between sentences and paragraphs, how to use standard source documentation formats, how to integrate source materials into their written work, and how to think, read, and write critically. Students should also have knowledge about the emergence of written English standards.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and writing of assignments. Practice for teacher-training students. The workload is estimated at 270 hours.

Examination requirements

All students: 80 % compulsory attendance in the seminars. For the teacher-training students: Practice and one assignment must be assessed as a pass. Other students: Two assignments must be assessed as a pass. Details of these assignments will be specified at the beginning of the semester.

Students on the bachelor's programme: at least 50% attendance on the first-semester programme ‘God Start’ is required. More information will be provided in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Four-hour written examination. Graded assessment.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1
