Learning outcomes

At the completion of this course the students shall:

be able to use appropriate communicative strategies for speaking and writing English in a business context
be able to compose various types of business documents
know how to prepare and deliver an oral presentation
be able to use an appropriate register, vocabulary and grammar in spoken and written communication
be able to describe, illustrate and analyze intercultural problems that may arise in business situations

Course contents

The course aims to help students develop good comprehensive language skills in business and administrative English. The course comprises communicative strategies for speaking and writing, with a view to enhance students' awareness of genre, register and appropriate vocabulary. Students will also learn English writing conventions necessary for the production of business documents.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Oral presentations. Estimated workload: Approximately 270 hours.

Examination requirements

One written assignment and one oral presentation must be assessed as Pass.

Several short assignments (6-10) must be assessed as a Pass. The exact number and format will be communicated by the instructor at the beginning of the term.

80% compulsory attendance in the seminars for all students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment comes in two parts, each weighted 50%. Students must pass both parts to pass the entire course.

Part I is a 4-hour written examination. You are allowed to use an English-English dictionary on the exam. Graded assessment.

Part II is a portfolio exam. The components of the portfolio will be communicated by the instructor at the beginning of the term. Graded assessment.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
