Project in stochastic process and signal processing

The project include two parts. The first part is about modeling of communication system with variable data rate and multiple hysteresis areas using stochastic process. The second part is to refine simulators and documents for digital signal processing.

My work in this project include two part:

1) Modeling of communication system with variable data rate and multiple hysteresis areas using stochastic process.

Statistical multiplexing of variable bit rate real time (VBR-rt) traffic has been widely used in compressed multimedia applications in computer networks and mobile communications. When employing statistical multiplexing for VBR-rt traffic, it is expected for the system to accommodate more high bit rate calls and at the same time to maintain the stability of the bit rate. Although more bit rate thresholds result in a larger number of calls in better encoding rate, they produce higher bit rate fluctuations. By involving hysteresis, the fluctuations can be mitigated at a cost of a slightly low bit rate.

In our project, we propose a general model using continuous time Markov chain to describe the dynamics of the system and to analyze the performance of the system with multiple hysteresis areas. More specifically, our proposed model involves multiple levels, which is separated by hysteresis areas. Based on the numerical results, we observed that with a proper configuration on the number and the length of hysteresis areas, better performance in both the number of high bit rate calls and the bitrate stability is obtained compared with the traditional approaches.

2) Refine simulators and documents for digital signal processing. I help professor Lei Jiao to polish the simulators and the documents for digital signal processing.

When doing this project with professor Lei Jiao, a paper regarding this work has been finished and submitted to IEEE ICC2017 conference. I have learnt how to use CTMC model with mathematical analysis. Working on the simulation part, I get to know matlab simulation.
