Claimed Pasts forsker vi på hvordan historisk materiale blir til relevante kilder til kunnskap om forhistorien. Hva slags historisk og sosialt bakteppe gjør at enkelte ting anses som særlig ettertraktede historiske objekter? Hva er det som gjør gjenstander til «kunnskapsbærere»? Hvilke formål tjener utforming, utvelgelse, kategorisering, fremstilling, bearbeiding, utstilling, omsetning, manipulering og fortolkning av disse kunnskapsbærerne, og hvem er involvert i prosessen?

Hvordan blir gjenstandsmateriale appropriert, omsatt og sirkulert, og hvordan finner det veien inn i samlinger og institusjoner? Hvilke asymmetriske maktrelasjoner spiller inn når forskere, kuratorer og arkivarer produserer kunnskap?

Våre forskningsspørsmål dreier seg om hvilken rolle institusjoner slik som universiteter, museer og arkiver spiller som åsteder for kunnskapsproduksjon knyttet til arkeologiske gjenstander, historisk materiale, manuskripter og håndskrifter. Et relevant aspekt for forskningen som foregår i Claimed Pasts er dermed hvorvidt det er mulig å avkolonisere av kunnskap i disse institusjonene.
