Disputerer på integrerte datasystemer i skipsfart

Arbeidsoppgavene er mange og kompliserte i skipsfarten. Hittil har spesialiserte dataverktøy for den enkelte oppgave gjort jobben, men Liping Mu argumenterer i sin doktorgradsavhandling for at samordnede, større IKT-systemer gjør jobben bedre.

Liping Mu har fulgt doktorgradsprogrammet ved Fakultet for teknologi og realfag med spesialisering i IKT, og disputerer for ph.d-graden 21. november 2013. Kinesiske Liping Mu arbeider i dag som systemarkitekt i Telenor.

 

Slik beskriver kandidaten selv essensen i avhandlingen:Information and Communication Technologies for Integrated Operations of Ships

 

“Integrated operations” for ships is a complex task that involves handling problems such as data integration, data transmission (communication) and application integration.

The traditional approach was to tackle these challenges separately by utilizing optimized, independent implementations.

However, as systems are becoming more complex (larger, highly distributed) than before, separate solutions may work fine within their own contexts but not for scenarios where all these challenges must be intensively addressed simultaneously. Attention must be paid to the connection between individuals and how to integrate the different solutions.

 

This dissertation mainly takes the maritime case – integrated operations for ships – as an example to argue for the development of large complex systems.

It considers the development process as an integration journey and looks at the integration problem from the data, communication and application levels in a consistent way in order to ensure the synergy among them.

 

Disputasfakta:

Kandidaten: Liping Mu was born in Guangde, Anhui, China on 6 April 1982. She received her bachelor’s degree in Automation from Wuhan University of Technology in 2003. She earned her Master in Control Science and Control Engineering in 2007 from Wuhan University of Technology. She worked as a software engineer in Wuhan Kotei Informatics Co., Ltd. for a year and a half. She joined the Department of ICT at University of Agder as a PhD Fellow in April 2009. She is currently working in Telenor Norge AS as a Middleware system architect.
