Stan Hawkins is a musicologist researching within the field of popular music studies. He has a background in musicology, composition, and analysis, with a main focus on interdisciplinary research. He holds a PhD from the University of York in composition and started the first popular music and recording courses at Salford University, Manchester in 1990, where he was Director of the Popular Music Research Unit from 1992-1995. He took up his current post at Oslo University in 1995, where he started up courses in popular music. Stan has long experience as a teacher, researcher, and has been editor and series editor for Routledge's Ashgate Folk and Popular Music Series from 2009-2019. In addition to leading various national and international projects, he has been guest researcher at City University London and Humboldt-Universität, Berlin. He is a leading scholar in gender and audiovisual research, with four international monographs six edited collections, and numerous chapter contributions and articles to his name. He was leader of a Norwegian Research Council state funded project (2010-2014) Popular Music and Gender in a Transcultural Context and is a key researcher behind the development of the Centre of Excellence RITMO at University of Oslo. He has worked as an evaluator for the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant Panels in 2018.
