Project: Fit For Delivery (FFD, 6-, 12 and 24 mo, 4y)
Fit for delivery is a study performed in collaboration between Sørlandet Hospital and the University of Agder. The main aim of Fit for delivery was to evaluate whether simple dietary advice together with organized physical activities during pregnancy, could influence gestational weight gain and weight retention, serum glucose levels, the child’s birth weight and the prevalence of pregnancy complications. The University of Agder has been responsible for the nutrition part of Fit for delivery.
In total 606 nulliparous were included in the study and randomized into control or intervention group. The intervention group received dietary advice per telephone in addition to attending organized physical activity sessions. A diet score was developed in line with the advice given to the intervention group. The intervention group improved their diet score during the intervention. Project: New Nordic Diet and pregnancy outcomes
The origins of health and disease can be traced back to fetal life. There is mounting evidence that maternal diet during pregnancy can influence maternal health and fetal conditions in this important developmental stage. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether a healthy and sustainable diet during pregnancy is associated with pregnancy weight gain and offspring birthweight. We also investigated potential associations between diet and serious pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and preterm birth. The study used data from approx. 70,000 women and their child who participated in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). We constructed a diet score that reflected adherence to a healthy and potentially sustainable Nordic diet and assessed odds ratios for the outcomes with high vs. low diet score. High vs. low diet score was associated with lower odds of excessive gestational weight gain (only normal weight women), lower odds of preeclampsia (all women), and lower odds of preterm birth (only nulliparous women). Children born to mothers with high diet score had higher mean birthweight than those born to mothers with low diet score. Women with high diet score had lower odds of giving birth to a child with low birthweight, but also higher odds of giving birth to a child with high birthweight compared to women with low diet score. Our findings support the importance of diet and diet quality during pregnancy for important aspects of maternal and child neonatal health.

Intervention project to increase parents' skills regarding homemade and healthy food for toddlers.
A randomized controlled trial was performed to evaluate whether cooking lessons with theory concerning food 6 months old infants had an effect on the child’s food intake, growth and lipid profile after the intervention and when the children were 1 and 2 years old. Recruitment took place in collaboration with Public health centers in Kristiansand and lasted from May 2012 to November 2013. Total number recruited: 143 children aged 5-6 months. Project: Food for preschoolers (Barns matmot)
This study, a cluster randomized trial, aimed to promote a healthy and varied diet among toddlers in kindergarten. The primary objectives were to reduce food neophobia in toddlers, and promote healthy feeding practices among kindergarten staff and parents. Secondary objectives were to increase food variety in toddlers’ diets and reduce future overweight and obesity in these children. The intervention finished in 2014. Eighteen randomly selected kindergartens located in two counties in Norway with enrolled children born in 2012 participated in the intervention.
A 9-week multi-component intervention was implemented, with four main elements: 1) kindergarten staff implemented a pedagogical tool (Sapere method) in daily sessions to promote willingness to try new food; 2) kindergarten staff prepared and served the toddlers a cooked lunch from a menu corresponding to the pedagogical sessions; 3) kindergarten staff were encouraged to follow 10 meal principles on modeling, responsive feeding, repeated exposure, and enjoyable meals; and 4) parents were encouraged to read information and apply relevant feeding practices at home. The control group continued their usual practices. Preference taste tests were conducted to evaluate behavioral food neophobia, and children’s height and weight were measured. Parents and staff completed questionnaires before and after the intervention.

Project: Early Food for Future Health
The early feeding environment is critical for establishing eating habits that may influence weight development and healthy growth in the long term. The purpose of this study is to promote appropriate feeding practices in parents, and early healthy dietary habits in children.
During springtime 2016, 900 parents of children between 3 and 5 months were recruited through social media (Facebook). The parents were randomly assigned to an intervention- or a control group. The intervention group have access to a website (www.spedbarnsmat.no) when the child`s age is between 6 and 12 months. Here, short monthly films provide information relating to beneficial parental feeding practices, diet quality and how to make healthy and age-appropriate homemade baby food. The control group receives usual treatment at the community child-health centers.
The intervention will continue through April 2017. We will publish scientific articles on the eHealth-intervention`s effect on parental feeding practices and children’s dietary habits.

Project: Fostering healthy dietary habits through a mobile-health intervention targeting toddlers' food and eating environment (Mat til minsten)
Background and aim: The aim of food4toddlers is to fostering healthy dietary habits through an e-health intervention targeting toddlers' food and eating environment. The intervention will be presented for parents when the child is in the important developmental stage between 12-18 months. The parents will get access to a website with information, films and recipes and they will get reminders regularly. We focus on availability of food that is good for the child and how parents can be good role models.
Method: The project is a cluster randomized controlled trial. Today, most parents are e-technology users. With an e-health approach we hope to recruit a broad part of the target population toddlers and their parents. We will recruit through facebook and health care centers.
Results: We will measure the child’s diet and self-feeding skills and the parents feeding practice, food planning skills and shopping behavior.

Project: A healthy and sustainable diet during pregnancy and beyond - associations with child’s subsequent growth pattern, risk of obesity and mental and cognitive development
A healthy and sustainable diet during pregnancy and beyond - associations with child’s subsequent growth pattern, risk of obesity and mental and cognitive development.
Nutrition during pregnancy and the early years of life represent a vulnerable phase for adverse exposures and nutritional imbalances. Healthy eating during this phase may especially be beneficial for the long-term development. The New Nordic Diet (NND) encompasses a concept of a potentially healthy and sustainable diet with foods that are traditionally consumed and locally available in the Northern countries. In this project, we will be investigating child adherence to NND, and the subsequent association with child growth pattern, obesity risk, and mental and cognitive development in children up to 8 years. The project is based on data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) which is a large prospective population-based cohort study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Pregnant mothers were recruited from all over Norway from 1999-2008, and the cohort now includes more than 114 000 children, 95 000 mothers and 75 000 fathers.

A cluster randomized web based intervention trial among one-year-old children in kindergarten to reduce food neophobia and promote healthy diets.
Background: A child’s first years of life are crucial for cognitive development and future health. Studies show that a varied diet with a high intake of vegetables is positive for weight development, mental health and cognitive development. A low intake of vegetables is one of the greatest challenges in children’s diets in Norway. Interventions that can increase children’s intake of vegetables should have an early onset to overcome children’s neophobia (reluctance to taste and eat new foods).
Aim of the study: To develop and measure the effect of two different interventions among one-year-old children in kindergartens in two counties in Norway.
Methods: The kindergartens will be randomized to one of three groups: two different intervention groups and one control group. Parents and staff will be asked to complete questionnaires before and after the intervention period of approximately three weeks. There will be follow-up-questionnaires when the children are 36 and 48 months old. Questionnaires, information videos and recipes will all be found in a study web page. 306 children will be included in the study.

Project: School Meal Project - Agder

Background: There is no organized school meal in Norway and children bring packed lunch from home. Most schools offer a milk prescription program (parent paid) and some schools offer a fruit prescription program (parent paid). Norwegian Guidelines for school meals are recently launched. There are socio economic differences in families, and the prevalence of overweight (including obese) among children is about 15 %, but higher in lower socio economic classes. The School Meal Project was developed based on the assumption that a healthy free school meal may influence children to eat a meal rich in healthy nutrients and thereby contribute to healthy eating habits – which in turn may contribute to prevention of childhood obesity.
Aims: The overall purpose of The School Meal Project was to evaluate the effect of a free healthy school meal every day for one year on meal pattern, diatary habits at school, learning environment, motivation for learning and weigth status among children 10-12 years old.
Methods: The design was a non-randomized intervention with a control group and qualitative in-depth interviews. Children at the age of 10-12 were recruited in two elementary schools in Aust-Agder county, Norway. A total of 164 children participated, 55 in the intervention group and 109 in the control group. One of the parents of each child was invited to participate. At baseline (August 2014) children and parents answered a questionnaire, and the children’s weight, height and waist circumference were measured. The intervention consisted of serving a free cold school meal every day for one year, consisting of whole grain bread, spread, fruit and vegetables according to the dietary guidelines. The measurements were repeated at follow-up 1 (January 2015) and at follow-up 2 (June 2015). Qualitative interviews were performed in fall 2015 with the intervention group to examine feasibility and possible barriers.

Project: “Lifelab Mat og helse”
LifeLab is a project where we will develop and evaluate a new teaching method to be used in teaching home economics to school children and students. LifeLab will have a more scientific approach and will have emphasis on practical experiments to the different subjects, compared with the traditional tuition. The aim of this project is to give school children more knowledge and understanding of the importance of nutrition on long term health. The project started October 2017.
