Daudi Pascal Ndaki har forsket på rollen til daglige ledere i mikrofinans-institusjoner. Funnene viser at det tar tid å bygge opp den spesifikke kunnskapen om mikrofinans som gir god avkastning både sosialt og finansielt.

Han disputerer for ph.d.-graden med avhandlingen “Chief Executive Officers and Microfinance Performance” torsdag 16. mars.

Daudi Pascal Ndaki har fulgt ph.d.-programmet ved Handelshøyskolen ved UiA med spesialisering i International Management. I stipendiatperioden har han vært finansiert av Sørlandets kompetansefond.

Chief Executive Officers and Microfinance Performance

The literature concerning the influence of chief executive officers on the performance of microfinance institutions is increasingly becoming a focal point for researchers.

A main reason for this increased interest is that, in entrepreneurial organizations like microfinance institutions, chief executive officers have important influence on the performance of microfinance.

Business education produces financial results

Generally, findings in this dissertation suggest that chief executive officers with a business education in microfinance institutions seem better at managing the much-debated trade-off between providing small loans and producing healthy financial results.

Likewise, chief executive officers may require several years of tenure before being able to focus on accessing external funding and market the message that investing in microfinance can offer both financial and social returns.

Better off with insider chief executives

Concerning ownership form, the role of stakeholders in microfinance institutions with non-profit ownership should not necessarily be to transform non-profit institutions into investors owned institutions, but to control the power of the chief executive officer through good monitoring.

Furthermore, insider chief executive officers have firm-specific skills, experience and network resources that result in enhanced performance in microfinance institutions.

Boards of microfinance institutions searching for a new chief executive officer should absolutely seek also internally for suited candidates.
