Artist entrepreneurs and creative businesses typically have the dual, and often contradictive, objectives of satisfying artistic needs and being financially self-sufficient.

Boyke Rudy Purnomo

Boyke Rudy Purnomo disputerer for ph.d.-graden med avhandlingen «Essays on Entrepreneurship and Creative industries» tirsdag 29. januar 2019.

Slik beskriver kandidaten selv essensen i avhandlingen:

The importance of artistic orientation on creative business

As one of the fastest growing sectors in the global economy, creative industries progress in the intersection between culture and economics.

Therefore, artist entrepreneurs and creative businesses typically have the dual, and often contradictive, objectives of satisfying artistic needs and being financially self-sufficient.

Clash: Economic theories vs creative industries

However, most economic and business management theories assume that an individual thinks and acts based on the rationality approach and profit maximization motive.

Implementing such theories in industries dominated by arts and aesthetic attributes may lead to difficulties.

In addition, policymakers tend to follow generic industrial models, even though creative industries function differently.

Studies show that the development of creative industries by the government and its agencies is often without a clear rationale, which then results in ineffective management practices.

Five findings in the thesis

Based on those background, the essays in this dissertation investigate and then provide some findings:

First, it offers a theoretical discussion on how existing economic theory may blur the understanding of creative industries, and further, it suggests some empirical works to be made to improve the understanding of the economics of creative industries.

Second, the dissertation develops a conceptualization of a term that frequently appears in the creative practices called “artistic orientation”, which is the individual inclination to generate and disseminate authentic goods that convey the beauty and symbolic meaning with the main goal of attaining emotional contentment.

Third, the dissertation also develops an instrument to be used to measure the artistic orientation concept.

Fourth, the essay empirically shows that artistic orientation of the artisan entrepreneurs affects the firm’s success, both financially and non-financially.

And finally, it is also found that literacy in financial management and entrepreneurial behavior of the artist-entrepreneur contributes to the creative business’s performance.
