Ph.d.kandidat

Bernhard Fäßler disputerer for ph.d.-graden med avhandlingen «Autonomous Optimization of Repurposed Electric Vehicle Batteries for Grid Balancing» mandag 20. august 2018.

Slik beskriver kandidaten selv essensen i avhandlingen:

Repurposing Electric Vehicle Batteries as Stationary Storages

Battery storage systems are increasingly being used to ensure smooth operation of the electrical grid by balancing demand and supply. This is on account of their compactness, environment-independence, high efficiencies, and wide-ranging power and energy capacities.

At present, however, battery storage systems for grid balancing are suffering from high costs along with high energy and material requirements.

EV-batteries as stationary storage

By reusing electric vehicle (EV) batteries as stationary storages, the lifecycle costs of such systems can be significantly reduced.

EV batteries are typically replaced if their capacity drops below 70–80% of their initial capacity.

However, they often still have sufficient capacity for stationary applications.

Decommissioned EV-battery repurposed

This thesis presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of a decommissioned electric vehicle battery repurposed as a stationary storage for autonomous grid balancing.

A high-temperature Sodium Nickel-Chloride ZEBRA (Zero Emission Battery Research Activities) battery is operated based on an autonomous optimization routine driven by a one-way communicated incentive. The incentive is a function representing the intention of the operator, e.g., grid balancing.

Simulations

First, the proposed local, autonomous battery control approach is simulated using a mathematical model of a ZEBRA battery to investigate the potential of such a system for grid balancing.

Simulations are then validated by implementing the control approach on an actual, decommissioned ZEBRA battery.

Finally, the impact of such storage systems  on a low-voltage distribution grid, consisting of a distributed generation network, is investigated to replicate  the real-world operating conditions probable for such systems.
