My research focused on finding the connection between place and memory and analysed the processes that unfold on the city’s scene: writing, mapping, walking, and remembering.

Andra-Lucia Rus

Ph.d.-cotutelle-kandidat

Slik beskriver kandidaten selv essensen i avhandlingen:

Place and memory in Lars Saabye Christensen’s Beatles-trilogy

The starting point of my PhD research was the assumption that in the case of Lars Saabye Christensen, the city plays its role at different.

Three influences by the city

Firstly, it is the backbone of the narrative thread, which is weaved against the background of the city.

Secondly, this relation also functions the other way around: as the narrative unfolds, the city is progressively constructed and meaningful places are being created through narration.

Thirdly, as the city is mapped and the narrative unfolds concurrently, memories are also anchored in close connection to the places they belong to so that they can be later triggered by encounters on the city’s map.

Connections

In order to understand how the city infiltrates the three novels by Lars Saabye Christensen (Beatles, Bly, Bisettelsen), my research focused on finding the connection between place and memory and analysed the processes that unfold on the city’s scene: writing, mapping, walking, and remembering.

The research falls under the broad umbrella of the “spatial turn” in the humanities and employs mainly the following theories and concepts: literary cartography, space and place, with weight on the slippery notion of “sense of a place” and the role of the senses in creating it, the processes of writing, mapping, walking, and remembering the city. Place and memory, as the central concepts of the research, are joined by the idea of narrative as a form of mapping.
