Ph.d.-kandidat

Surya Teja Kandukuri disputerer for ph.d.-graden fredag 15. juni 2018 med avhandlingen Health Monitoring of Pitch and Yaw Systems in Offshore Wind Farms.

Slik beskriver kandidaten selv essensen i avhandlingen:

“Health Monitoring of Wind Turbine Pitch and Yaw Systems”

Renewable energy sources such as the wind energy, are gaining importance due to depleting fossil fuel reserves and their adverse environmental impact.

Maintenance offshore

Offshore wind farms are becoming commonplace worldwide owing to better wind quality on the sea and plenty of real-estate.

However, the harsh sea weather results in higher failure rates besides the outages are extended outages due to their location. These factors contribute to increased maintenance costs and low profitability of offshore wind farms.

Predictive maintenance based on condition monitoring, alleviates these problems by detecting faults in early stages thereby providing support to maintenance personnel in planning a timely maintenance action. Thus, it has the potential to minimize the maintenance costs while improving the reliability and availability of the wind farm.

Extended use of condition monitoring systems

Today, only a few systems on the wind turbine such as the gearbox and generator have condition monitoring systems installed.

However, the wind turbine consists of several components which result in frequent failures and outages that need to be addressed to achieve an optimal maintenance strategy for the wind farm. Among these, the pitch and yaw systems are known to fail often and result in extended outages. The pitch and yaw systems move the blades and turbine in and out of the wind to maximize power production and reduce unwanted structural stresses.

Monitoring the pitch and yaw systems

This dissertation addresses the condition monitoring of the pitch and yaw systems in an offshore wind farm context. Their operating profiles were studied to evaluate the specific requirements for condition monitoring, and diagnostic methods were developed.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence techniques were evaluated to provide strategies for large-scale deployment of condition monitoring techniques. Thus, the dissertation strives to fill the gaps in realizing an optimal maintenance strategy for a more reliable and profitable offshore wind farm.
