The 5th generation (5G) mobile communication networks focus on three main technological pillars as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine type communications (mMTC).
While eMBB is already in the deployment phase, how to provide URLLC and mMTC still needs further investigation, especially when the stringent requirements for both URLLC and mMTC are considered.
Therefore, topics relevant to URLLC and mMTC have attained a surge of research interests from both industry and academia.
A major contribution of this dissertation lies in initial access scheme design considering both URLLC and mMTC traffic.
Three initial access schemes are proposed for scenarios that involve a massive number of devices with and without URLLC requirements. A dynamic resource allocation scheme for heterogeneous traffic which takes the advantage of the 5G new radio frame structure is proposed.
Both grant-based and grant-free access schemes are investigated in this thesis work.
The dissertation also investigates traffic prediction at a 5G base station when a massive number of devices generate traffic abruptly during a short period of time.
Such a situation could cause high collisions at the base station resulting in loss of packets and longer delays.
With precise traffic prediction, radio resources can be allocated proactively to mitigate such shortcomings.
In addition, an analysis of service availability for a mobile user in 5G networks to achieve anytime and anywhere communication is performed and three strategies to improve per-user availability are explored.
All the above proposed schemes are evaluated and compared with reference schemes through in-depth mathematical analysis and extensive discrete-event simulations.
