The PhD specialization in linguistics includes all areas of linguistics as well as the related fields of Translation Studies and Communication Studies. The specialization allows for a high degree of flexibility regarding theoretical and methodological approaches in research. Linguistics explores the structure of language, its role in human activity, and its relationship to biological, psychological, cultural, and social domains, providing a window on cognition and mind, on people, and on society. The specialization thus recruits candidates with a focus on language structure, language function and language use alike, and both synchronous and diachronic research are encouraged. The specialization offers courses reflecting that language can be explored from a variety of different angles.
