Within the specialisation in Engineering Sciences, there are four scientific fields:

  • Civil and Structural Engineering
  • Materials
  • Mechatronics
  • Physics & Applied Mathematics
  • Renewable Energy

Coursework

The Faculty offers the following PhD courses in Engineering Sciences:

Compulsory courses

The candidate must choose one the following courses according to which scientific field he or she is admitted to:

  • Civil and Structural Engineering: BYG601 Civil and structural engineering management (5 ECTS)
  • MaterialsMT-601 Advanced Materials Science (5 ECTS)
  • Mechatronics: MAS601 Design, Modelling, and Simulation of Mechatronic Systems (5 ECTS)
  • Physics & Applied Mathematics: ENE705 Selected Topics in Engineering (5 ECTS)
  • Renewable Energy: ENE601 Energy Conversion (5 ECTS)

Elective courses

Several elective courses for each scientific field are available. Please find a list of relevant courses at uia.no and in the template for the project description.

General requirements

15 ECTS are normally to be technical courses.

20 ECTS are normally to be taken at UiA.

Specialised PhD courses at other universities or university colleges may be included as electives in the coursework component. Relevant PhD courses may be found for example at Aalborg University, University of South-Eastern Norway or different data bases for PhD courses, like phdcourses.dk.

Up to 10 credits of the elective courses may be taken as national or international research schools and courses, or like special syllabus in the form of literature, or as methodological studies which are relevant to the research programme.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

The employment opportunities in Engineering Sciences are diverse. Examples of typical employers include:  Universities, research organizations and institutes, high technology companies including energy producers and distribution companies, power-intensive industry, consulting companies, offshore industry, transportation companies and the public sector.
