When the applicant's average grades are lower than required, the hosting research group at the Faculty of Engineering and Science must document the applicant’s ability to complete the PhD programme. In such an event, the Faculty of Engineering and Science may recommend extra requirements to be included in the basis for admission.
Competence in English is a requirement for all applicants to the PhD program. International candidates that are not exempt from the English language requirements pursuant to the guidelines of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT), must document this through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:

The compulsory course ENE601 form the multi-disciplinary common core material and will normally be included in the coursework component of the PhD students in renewable energy. The course EX-602/3 is also compulsory.
The courses ENE602, ENE603, ENE604, ENE605, ENE606, ENE701, ENE702, ENE703, ENE704 and ENE705 form the specialist foundation in the coursework component. Normally, two or three of these courses will be included in the coursework component of each PhD student.
Specialised courses at other universities or university colleges may be included as electives in the coursework component. Relevant PhD courses may be found for example at Aalborg University and Telemark University College, or The Norwegian Research School in Renewable Energy.
Up to 10 credits of the elective courses may be taken as national or international research courses or through a special syllabus in the form of literature, or as methodological studies which are relevant to the research programme.

After satisfactory completion of their degree, PhD candidates shall have developed a high level of scientific competence in Renewable Energy. Candidates shall have acquired wide academic knowledge in Renewable Energy and specialized knowledge within a main area in Renewable Energy.
The PhD programme consists of a coursework component of 30 credits and the completion of a thesis weighted at 150 credits. Research for the thesis is done under the guidance of two highly qualified supervisors in the relevant field, one of them being the main supervisor.
The coursework consists of lectures, seminars and discussions. It is also possible to create special courses or use summer schools as courses. Parts of the coursework can be completed at other institutions in Norway or abroad, with the approval of the Faculty/PhD Committee. As part of the research education, the PhD candidate is required to:
Candidates are expected to take full responsibility for their own learning and personal progress. It is assumed that students will achieve major parts of the curriculum learning objectives through self-study.
All coursework or other activities to be included in the coursework component must have a final assessment. The assessment method is normally an exam or essay which builds on the course literature and the PhD candidate’s own research. The assessment method in the courses appears in the course descriptions.
Grading: Pass/Fail, where Pass corresponds to the grade B or higher on the master’s programme.
The doctoral program concludes with a public trial lecture on a prescribed topic and a public thesis defence (disputation) where the candidate presents an account of the results of the scientific investigations reported in the thesis and defends these results in a discussion with two opponents. The disputation is further described in the supplementary regulations for the PhD Degree at the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
