Abel Runga from Zimbabwe

Master in Global Development and Planning

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Abel Runga, I am a student at Risk from Zimbabwe. I am the former Secretary General of the student representative council at Bindura University. Currently, I am the outgoing Treasurer General of the Zimbabwe National Students Union.

Why did you choose Norway?

Norway gave me an opportunity to continue my studies.

When looking at universities, what stood out about UiA?

I have a background in politics, peace and governance. So I found myself inclined to a multifaceted programme such as the Master in Global Development and Planning at UiA. Also, Kristiansand is the warmest city in Norway.

What were your first impressions upon arrival?

The reception at UiA is very impressive and friendly. I also liked the Global Lounge and the coffee meetings they arrange.

What do you think about your course in particular?

My course resonates well with my undergraduate programme and my experience in civic society and politics.

What do you like about Kristiansand and why?

Kristiansand is quiet and not too crowded city. Everyone respects other people’s space.

What was one thing you discovered about Norway that was unexpected?

That 4% of the land is used for agricultural purpose.

What would you like to share about UiA to your home country?

The first thing I would share is students’ engagement from different parts of the world, and its importance in sharing knowledge and building a strong social environment.

The use of Canvas is very impressive. It makes e-learning very easy, students have a chance to be in a contact with each other, tutors and teachers. It also provides a safe place for documents and work.

Do you think UiA has given you any unique opportunities?

Yes. For example, the impact of networking. UiA has given me an opportunity to network with students from around the globe, which has strengthened my social capital. There are also opportunities for exchange which helps my research work and knowledge sharing.
