On completion of this course, the students should be able to:

explain essential management theories, concepts, and methodologies
identify and critically examine strengths and weaknesses in management by evaluating cases and reflecting upon their own experiences

Course contents
The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding and appreciation for the role and practice of management in sustainable development, and with the ability to apply practical methods to project management problems. The course is organised around a practical exercise in designing a development project. Students will learn about fundamental management concepts and theories, the culture and context in which management occurs and the role of management at various level of decision making. All managerial activity takes place in some institutional context, and students will explore various external factors affecting organisational development and performance. Students will also develop familiarity with project planning methods including stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach. Finally, they will go through a hazard identification and risk assessment exercise for the project designed during the course.
Teaching methods
Netbased teaching through Canvas. Estimated workload, 27 hours per credit.
Assessment methods and criteria
Portfolio assessment including hand-ins, activities and contributions during the course. A study guide and calendar will provide more detailed information at the beginning of the semester. The grades A-F are used (ECTS grading scale).
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
