Learning outcomes

After course completion the student must have achieved the following

  • Developed an understanding how the theatre's aesthetic strategies and tools can be applied outside the world of theatre.
  • Have learnt to design and execute smaller projects outside the world of theatre with different production frameworks, partners and target audiences.
  • Have become conversant in the applied theatrical methodologies, for exploration of and work with contemporary occurrences and challenges
  • Be able to plan and execute a variety of tasks and projects, alone and in a group, and in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines
  • Basic knowledge of theatre pedagogy/teaching methods

Course contents

The course provides a theoretical and practical introduction to how aesthetic theatre strategies and tools are applied to educational, social, therapeutic or popular cultural purposes outside the theatre. The course provides students with experiences of participatory and creative work in a variety of fields. Students will have the opportunity to meet professionals who apply their theatre professional expertise outside the theatre and will become acquainted with selected projects and collaborators (with the opportunity for internship/ placements). Students will also develop smaller projects of their own with different production frameworks, partners and target groups. Ethical requirements and relevant guidelines will be communicated and discussed. Students will develop the ability to integrate ethical perspectives and dilemmas into the practical work. The course is practical in nature, with theoretical material linking to the various practical activities. Theatre terminology, theory and methods will be presented and addressed in a way that allows students to reflect on their own and the projects of others.

Teaching methods

Work will be predominantly group-based, and will encompass both theory and practice. Lessons comprise practice and workshops, lectures, seminars, group projects, conferences, rehearsals and independent practice.

Some classes in select subject matters are mandatory. These will be highlighted on Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected workload is 27 hours per study point

Assessment methods and criteria

Written home examination completed over 5 days.

Evaluation method: Graded by letters

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
