Mental health work and health promotion in nursing

The student:

Knowledge

• demonstrates knowledge of the nurse's health-promoting and preventative functions
• demonstrates extensive knowledge of mental health and the most common mental disorders and diseases
• demonstrates knowledge of intoxication and addiction
• demonstrates knowledge of coercive provisions

• is able to reflect on and handle ethical issues, as well as adjust her/his own practice in her/his service
• is able to apply knowledge of assessment, treatment and follow-up to support the patient's decision-making basis
• is able to apply professional knowledge of mental health and the most common mental disorders to systematically observe, assess, decide and propose appropriate nursing measures, as well as evaluate their effect and adjust if necessary
• is able to apply knowledge of health promotion and preventive measures
• is able to assess situations that may develop to threatening to patients and staff, and can take measures to prevent such incidents
• is able to use knowledge to implement measures that promote good mental health

General competence

• is able to plan and execute communication and interaction with patients and relatives based on respect, co-participation and integrity
• demonstrates insight into the relationships between health, education, work and living conditions
• demonstrates insight into social and health problems including neglect, violence, abuse, intoxication and socio-economic problems, and can identify people with such challenges, as well as take necessary measures and / or treatment, or refer to further treatment

The working methods are lectures, seminars, group work, simulation and self-study. The scope of work in the course is estimated to 135 hours.
