• has knowledge about the historical development of nursing and its significance for the profession and work practice
• has knowledge about the organization of health services in Norway, as well as current health legislation
• has broad knowledge about the human basic needs
• has knowledge about clinical assessment processes in nursing
• has knowledge about the nurse's documentation duty and the requirements for documentation in nursing practice
• has knowledge about quality indicators and standard terminology in nursing documentation
• is familiar with the aging process and the specific needs of the elderly
• is familiar with the role and responsibility of nurses in avoiding adverse incidents related to drug handling
• has knowledge about processes of learning, coping, and change related to health failure
• has knowledge about drug handling

Skills

• is able to reflect on his/her own relational and communicational skills
• is able to reflect upon and handle ethical issues
• is able to apply professional knowledge of basic needs, health and health failure to systematically observe, assess and propose appropriate nursing measures

Part 2: Assessment and decision in nursing

• Nursing aimed at meeting the basic human needs related to health failure
• Clinical assessment, decision and problem solving
• Documentation of clinical assessments and decisions
• Consequences of aging and disability for the ability to communicate, interact and attend to basic needs
• Hygienic principles, infection prevention and infection control
• Drug management

The teaching methods are mainly group based on clinical issues in addition to lectures, seminars and self-study. Group seminars are compulsory.

The student workload in the course is estimated to 486 hours.

Part 1.

• Approved, individual multiple choice test.
• Participation in teaching related to PROFUND - Interaction of Professions.

Part 2.

• Approved participation in obligatory group seminars.
• Approved oral presentation of case in groups.

Part 1: Essay - individual, written assignment. Graded assessment.

Weighted 30 percent of overall grade.

Part 2: Individual 5 hour written school examination. Graded assessment.

Weighted 70 percent of overall grade.

Both parts must be passed in order for the exam in the course to be passed.
