Recommended pre-requisites

Language skills equivalent to level 2 in upper secondary school (general studies branch)/ B1 Common European Framework for Languages are recommended. A language course or a stay in a Spanish speaking country is also recommended. The main language of instruction is Spanish. It will be very demanding to follow the course without any previous knowledge.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: Upon completion of the course students shall

  • have knowledge of grammatical structures in Spanish
  • recognise different variants of Spanish
  • have knowledge of the differences between formal and informal language
  • have general knowledge of academic writing

Skills: Upon completion of the course students shall be able to

  • understand authentic texts, both oral and written, in Spanish
  • use Spanish in different communicative situations
  • analyse Spanish language
  • communicate in Spanish with good pronunciation and intonation
  • use central Spanish language structures

General competency: Upon completion of the course students shall be able to:

  • analyse and evaluate learning strategies and communicative strategies
  • have knowledge of important contrastive difficulties for Norwegians or own mother tongue within the Spanish language
  • present topics within the course both orally and written on a structured way using references.

Course contents

The course focuses on spoken language to introduce different variants of Spanish. Working with different dialects and variants of Spanish, the student will increase their ability to understand and express themselves in Spanish, and to recognise different communicative situations.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and seminars. Practice for teacher-training students. Estimated workload: Approximately 400 hours.

Examination requirements

Mandatory attendance requirement: 70%

Assessment methods and criteria

A written assignment consisting of 1500 words and an oral examination.The written assignment will make up 40% for the final grade, and the oral examination will make up 60 %. Graded assessment.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
