Upon successful completion of this course the students should be able to demonstrate:
skills in practical management
knowledge of what motivates employees
knowledge of various aspects of the development of human resources
reflective skills on their own leadership behavior, and the ability to see this in a broader organisational context
ability to see and reflect on how ones own resources (personality, previous experience etc) affect leadership performance
Course contents
The content of this course is tailored to students entering their first managerial position or who are at the beginning of their practice as managers. Through practical experience in a business context, students will develop knowledge and skills for the exercise of management in practice. To act as a manager, the ability to perform operational management is essential. Reflection on their own managerial behavior for the development of good practical leadership is also important. The course is based on the theoretical models and theories covered in Module 1 (ORG121). Further, the course will give lessons in how the manager can solve conflicts and create efficient and motivated employees. The course will also discuss how managers can create a positive environment for learning and development of skills and competences, as well as for creating employee-driven innovations.
Teaching methods
Working in private or public sector. Reflecting and keeping a log on ones own leadership behaviors and practices. Students are divided into groups to reflect on common leadership challenges. The internship quality is assured by both the teacher and a supervisor. Further information can be found in Canvas. Only internships approved by UiA can serve as work experience in this course.
Examination requirements
Passed exam in ORG983-1 Motivational Leadership ( 7.5 ECTS credits ). In addition, the student must have a minimum of 160 hours of practice in business a given business (approved by UiA). To get the course approved the student may not have more than 20 % absence during the internship. Compulsory professional supervision and attendance in groups.
Assessment methods and criteria
Two individual reports. The first comprising 40%, and the second comprising 60% of the final letter grade.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
