Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should:
have knowledge of in different musical historical eras
have a broad understanding of music as an art form
have knowledge of music as part of the cultural heritage
have knowledge of the aesthetics of traditional folk music
have knowledge of the aesthetics of the popular music tradition
have knowledge of the music technological development within popular music
Course contents
The course emphasizes different eras and genres in the popular music history: African American music history, electronic music history, traditional music and pop and rock history. In the course, students will develop their skills in listening, style knowledge and verbalization in the field.
Teaching methods
The teaching consists of lectures and collaborative group assignments. During the autumn semester, the students are divided into groups, with a final 2-hour oral presentation for the class based on a chosen genre or era.
Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.
Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.
Examination requirements
Approved attendance in compulsory classes
Approved oral presentation / concert in the autumn semester. Scope: approx. 2 hours. Mandatory participation in the group.

Assessment methods and criteria
12 days individual written home exam. Scope approx. 2500-3000 words.
Graded assessment.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
