Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to
  • Account for the theory and methods of general blood type serology, the most important blood type systems and their importance, pre-transfusion examinations and procedures for clinical examination in relation to specific clinical problem areas.
  • Account for donor selection, blood donation, preparing, storing and dispensing of blood products.
  • Describe clinical problems related to transfusion, transfusion complications, hemolysis diseases of the newborn and management after delivery. Account for appropriate diagnostic procedures and laboratory testing
  • Describe clinical problems related to autoimmunity and allergy, particularly connective tissue- and atopic diseases. Account for appropriate diagnostic procedures and laboratory testing
  • Account for basic concepts in quality assurance, safe administration of blood transfusion, quality control requirements, traceability, documentation and reporting routines.

Course contents

The course is designed to enable the students to handle and analyze blood transfusion samples, create quality-assured reports and blood products and evaluate the final results. The use of cases from clinical practice will be emphasized. The practical part of the course provides a thorough introduction to the most important techniques in blood bank work.

Important topics include quality evaluation, sources of error, use of quality controls and quality assurance.

Teaching methods

Instruction is comprised of lectures, laboratory exercises and group work. It is compulsory to take part in the group work and laboratory exercises. The expected workload is ca 270 hours.

Examination requirements

All compulsory assignments must have obtained a Pass.

 

Assessment methods and criteria

4 hours written individual exam under supervision. Graded assessment.

Evaluation
