Learning outcomes
Know the main theories of social science research
Be able to distinguish between different paradigms in the social sciences, what kind of philosophical foundation they build on, and what this entails in terms of applying theories
Be able to critically reflect on different methodological and disciplinary traditions
Be able to apply different theoretical perspectives in social science research and understand their impact in relation to practical issues, and to be able to explain ethical aspects of research
Course contents
Course in scientific theory and methodology will take as a starting point general theory of "philosophies of the social sciences." Emphasis is placed on various theoretical / disciplinary approaches to the social sciences (paradigms). The emphasis here will enable you to get a deeper understanding of the importance of different paradigmatic docks that different disciplines have and to train the student in his own reasoning around these issues and the application of them in their own work. There is also emphasis on ethics in research, and the increased attention to ethics and social responsibility in the corporate strategic literature.
Teaching methods
Instruction will be a combination of elctures, seminars, group work and writing term papers. Students will actively participat and present technical material as breakout discussions of the student group.
Assessment methods and criteria
The examination is twofold:
One term paper counts 60%
4 hour individual written exam counts 40%
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
