On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to
know the design and use of the most important machine elements, and have deeper knowledge of the design and application of selected machine parts
model more complex machine structures using the element method-based tools
apply 3D CAD system SolidWorks for the model and drawing generation
prepare 3D models for finite element Analysis
use the element method-based tools for basic optimization / verification of machine structures
Course contents
The course is an introduction course for students who do not hold a bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
The course consists of four modules: Statics and Strenght of Materials, Machine Elements, 3D Modeling and Finite Element Modeling.
Statics & Strength of Materials: Theory of statically determined beams, frames, trusses and composite structures. Moment, shear, torsion and axial loaded. Equilibrium, graphical and analytical methods. Stress analysis for linear elastic material. Knowledge of statically indeterminate structures and deflection.
Machine Elements: Design. Materials. Fracture Hypotheses. Analysis of stress. Calculation of safety. Transmission. Shafts. Critical speed and balancing. Calculation of deflection. Force Transfer, bearing and gear.
3D Modeling: Introducing the use of modern CAD tools and the manufacture of technical drawings. The CAD program used in the course is SolidWorks.
Finite-Element Modeling: Introduction to the element method, linear static analysis, application of volume elements. Application of software.
Teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory work and exercises. Estimated workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.
Examination requirements
Four compulsory exercises must be approved in order to sit the exam. Information will be given in Canvas at the start of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
Individual digital examination - 4 hours. Graded assessment.
Evaluation
Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.
