Successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
read and understand statistical reports.
use probability calculus and statistical inference in their professions
make use of methods to calculate uncertainty, risk, and reliability.
use relevant electronic tools
Course contents
Gathering and analysing data, with an application in technology
Probability and conditional probability. Bayes’ theorem.
Stochastic variables and probability distributions (including binomial, Poisson, normal, gamma, beta, and t distributions)
Statistical inference, with Interval estimates and hypothesis testing for Gaussian, binomial and Poisson processes. Predictive inference. Both Bayesian and frequentist methods
Linear regression with uncertainty
Uncertainty, risk, and reliability.
Use of electronic tools
Teaching methods
Lectures, tutorial groups for exercises, mandatory assignments. Information on exercises will be provided in Canvas.
Examination requirements
Enough approved mandatory exercises, including a mandatory project. Information about the mandatory exercises will given in Canvas at the start of the semester.
Assessment methods and criteria
3 hour written exam (counts 70 %) and a project report (counts 30 %). Graded assessment.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”
