The content of power electronics is beyond the scope of a one-semester course. Power electronics has already advanced to the point where it is difficult to cover the entire subject in a one semester course. This course will cover the applications of power electronics for the control and conversion of electrical power with emphasis on renewable energy systems and electric drives / vehicles. On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to
account for a range of power electronics applications for developing power conditioning devices for integration of renewable and distributed electrical energy systems,
describe and analyze basic topologies of both DC-DC converters,
understand disturbances from power conditioning devices on the power grid (i.e. power quality),
understand and analyze electric and hybrid vehicle drive train systems
Energy conversion and control of electrical energy systems through power conditioning devices.
Design of switching power poles and DC-DC converter topologies for continuous and discontinuous conduction mode with bi-directional power flows.
Design of feedback controller for DC-DC converters and system stability analysis.
Power factor correction topologies and designing of required feedback controller.
Controlled rectifiers with full and dual converters, and its role in power factor improvements.
Electric and Hybrid vehicle drive system topologies
Lectures and instruction. Parts of the syllabus must be read as self-study. Estimated work load for the average student is approximately 200 hours.
Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises and / or laboratory assignments. Information will be given in the Canvas at the beginning of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
4-hour individual written examination (60 % contribution to final assessment), and portfolio (40 % contribution to final assessment). ECTS grade assessment.
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Offered as Single Standing Module
The students should have PC, MAC, tablet or similar portable equipment available for use in the learning situation. From the academic year 2014 - 2015, such equipment is being considered to be mandatory.
