Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to
understand concepts in modelling and simulating the dynamic phenomena of electrical power systems,
understand theory and practice of modelling main power system components, such as synchronous machines, excitation systems and turbine governors, frequency and voltage stability and control,
understand the theory and practice of system stability and control and mitigation of system oscillations after contingencies
utilize the analysis of power system dynamics for transmission system planning
perform multi-objective analysis and planning under uncertainty with high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources,
analyze power capacity, expansion, dynamic modeling and stability countermeasures with increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources.
Course contents
Dynamic properties of electric generators, conventional as well as high capacity wind turbine generators, power system networks, loads and interconnected / multi-area systems. Models suitable for analyzing the dynamic performance of generators, control of generators, load and frequency control, transient models, electro-mechanical dynamics - small and large disturbances, behavior of generators in case of disturbances, transient stability, equal area criteria, frequency stability and control, voltage stability, stability enhancements.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises. Estimated work load for the average student is approximately 200 hours.
Examination requirements
Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises, and a presentation of selected topics.
Assessment methods and criteria
4-hour individual written examination. Graded assessment.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in Renewable energy.
Other information
The students should have PC, MAC, tablet or similar portable equipment available for use in the learning situation. From the academic year 2014 - 2015, such equipment is being considered to be mandatory.
