After completing the course, the student will
Knowledge
• have detailed knowledge about the structure of central intracellular macromolecules and their location and function in the cell.
• understand basic biochemical processes such as photosynthesis and respiration.
• know about cell division, including similarities and differences between the two types of cell division in eukaryote cells.
• know about how genetic material is organized during cell division and how this determines inheritance of characteristics.
• have knowledge about the structure and replication of DNA and how protein synthesis takes place in the cell.
• understand how structure gives function to organ systems in animals (including humans).
• understand how the human body functions as a unit and maintains a stabile internal environment.
Skills
• be able to describe a microscope’s basic make up, explain the function of the different parts, and use a microscope to study tissue slice preparations.
• be able to carry out, and report on, simple experiments that demonstrate central biological processes.
• be able to express oneself in writing and orally, using adequate scientific terminology, about the characteristics and processes of living organisms.
• be able to use lab reports and oral presentations to document practical work.
• have experience with use of data logging equipment to observe and illustrate biological processes.
General competencies
• be able to use basic knowledge of physiology to understand connections in nature.
• be able to develop skills and knowledge about physiology.
• be able to develop understanding of core concepts in physiology.
Teaching and learning activities
There are two weeks of teaching practice for teacher-training students on the lektorutdanning program.
The course has an expected workload of 270 hours.
Attendance to all obigatoriske laboratory exercises must be approved and all assignments and other work requirements must be passed, must be passed, see Canvas for more information.
For teacher-training students, an additional 25 hours of practice in the same semester must be passed. Students who are not teacher-training students, must pass one additional compulsory assignment.
