French, One-year Programme

Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Recommended previous knowledge

Language skills equivalent to level 2 in upper secondary school (general studies branch) are recommended. A language course or a stay in France is also recommended. It will be very demanding to follow the programme without any previous knowledge.

General description and profile

This is a two-semester programme, autumn and spring, and it includes a 5-week stay in Caen, France, in January/February. The programme contains 4 courses of 15 ECTS credits each. The stay in France in January/February and the related project work, are included in the course FR-124-1 French Literature and Culture 2.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, students will have
  • trained their oral and written language proficiency
  • acquired knowledge of French literature from various epochs and genres
  • knowledge of French social, political, historical, cultural and geographical conditions
  • acquired basic theoretical and practical knowledge of French grammar and phonology

Internationalization

Our one-year programme in French offers a 5 week stay abroad at OFNEC, the center for Norwegian students at the University of Caen in Normandie. The stay is part of the course French literature and culture 2, which is given in the second term. The prescribed texts for the one-year programme comprises literature and language resources from all over the French-speaking world. A lot of the teaching is in French. Researchers from foreign institutions frequently visit the university and give guest lectures. The one-year programme usually has exchange students from French-speaking countries who partake in one or more subjects.

Occupational profiles / further studies

The one-year programme in French can be part of a study course leading to teaching certification and employment opportunities in the Norwegian school system. Please note upcoming changes (2019) in course and program requirements for acceptance to PPU-A teacher training in general subjects (PPU-A) at the University of Agder.
The programme may also provide a useful background for a broad spectre of professions in which knowledge of France and the French language is an important qualification. The programme qualifies graduates for pursuing further studies in French. The course may be included in a bachelor´s programme in French, in the graduate teacher programme and as a minor in several other bachelor programmes offered at UiA. Courses in French may also be included in the general teacher training programme.

Evaluation

Study programme evaluation is conducted annually in the programme committee in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.2.

Other information

The University of Agder (UiA) encourages increased use of digital tools in its study programmes. The aim is to utilize new forms of communication and to try new arrangements for teaching and academic supervision. Students at UiA will to an increasing extent be using computers in their daily academic work. A transition to digital examinations is an important part of this process. It is a requirement that all students at UiA have their own portable computer (laptop) for use in teaching and examinations, see Examination Regulations, University of Agder, §12d.
