Higher Education Entrance Qualification
In the Bachelor Programme Literature and Theatre students will study central works within literature, film and theatre in order to create their own productions inspired by these. In this manner different interpretations will appear, where text, acting and live images constitute a totality in film and on the stage.
The programme has three specializations. The specialization in film makes the programme to a 3-year integrated study. By choosing a specialization in theatre or literature, the programme has a major subject of 80 ECTS credits.
The first year of study consists of two interdisciplinary subjects, each containing elements of literature, film and theatre, in all 60 ECTS credits. In relation to later in-depth studies each one of these subjects counts 20 ECTS credits. The second and third study year of the bachelor's programme opens for a specialization study in literature, film or theatre.
Specialization in screen production and film studies:
20 ECTS credits from the first year of study + 60 ECTS credits the second year (LFT105, LFT106, LFT202 and LFT203) + 40 ECTS credits the third year (LFT204, LFT205 and LFT206).
Specialization in theatre:
20 ECTS credits drama/theatre from the first year of study + 30 ECTS credits in theatre (TEA103 and TEA104) + 30 ECTS credits advanced study (TEA201 and TEA202).
Specialization in literature:
20 ECTS credits from the first year of study + 30 ECTS credits in literary subjects (NO-143 and NO-144) + 30 ECTS credits advanced study (NO-209 + NO-212).

The teaching methods alternate between lectures, seminars and supervised productions. A large part of the work is carried out through group projects.
The attendance is compulsory (80%) in the workshops and in the film- and theatre production parts of the course. A detailed overview of the compulsory sessions will be published in the semester plan. During the studies, there will be at least one field trip in Norway or in Europe.
Language of instruction is Norwegian.
The fields of literature, film and theater are part of a global research field, and the methodological and theoretical approach of this program is internationally minded. Most courses offer prescribed literature in English as well as other Scandinavian languages.
Students work with artistic primary sources (film, theater, fiction) from different continents, and we aim to increase our students’ global interest through work with texts from non-Western cultures.
At least one course will be taught in English and is open to inbound exchange students.
Students may study abroad at one of our partner institutions. You will find our exchange options on the university’s site for student exchange.
We recommend that students who specialize in theater or literature study abroad as their minor (term 4 for those specializing in literature and term 5 for those specializing in drama/theater).
Students specializing in film must choose a partner institution that offers courses in film related subjects. Studying abroad is recommended during term 4. For further information, contact the department’s advisor for student exchange: Tone Frøysnes mailto:tone.froysnes@uia.notone.froysnes@uia.no or Head of Studies Magnus Thunes Jensen mailto:magnus.t.jensen@uia.nomagnus.t.jensen@uia.no
During the first year of the program students travel to a European city where they will see, assess and analyze theater at a high international level.
LFT104 has to be passed before entering LFT102.
Specialization in screen production and film studies:
Specialization in drama/theatre:
In order to be allowed to enroll in the advanced courses (TEA202 and TEA203), both courses taken the first year, as well as TEA103 and TEA104, must be assessed as a Pass.
Specialization in literature:
In order to be allowed to start working on the Bachelor's thesis, all courses taken the first year, as well as 30 ECTS credits of Nordic literature (including 15 advanced-level credits) must be assessed as a Pass.
The study programme can prepare for work within the culture section, education and within audiovisual communication, depending on choice of subjects during the programme.
The programme may qualify for admission to master's programmes in literary studies, drama/theatre and film studies depending on which specialization the student chooses. The student must check admission requirements for master's programmes of their interest.
The Bachelor's degree with specialization in literature qualifies graduates for admission to the Master's Degree Programme in Nordic Languages and Literature at the University of Agder, provided 30 ECTS credits have been completed in Nordic linguistics.
Graduates with specialization in film or drama/theatre are qualified for admission to the Master's Degree Programme in Fine Arts at the University of Agder.
