Building Resilient Communities through Inclusive Education in East Africa (RESILIENT)

About the project

RESILIENT is aimed at strengthening research and capacity building in social work in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. It is an important goal of the project to build knowledge that is locally relevant and responsive to the needs and challenges of local communities.

The project is conducted in collaboration between the Department of social work at the University of Rwanda (UR), The Department of social work and social administration at Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda, the Institute of Social Work (ISW) in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the Department of sociology and social work at the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway.
The project is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) through the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research (NORHED).
The project has the following key objectives:

• To build research capacity among faculty and students on social development in general, with particular emphasis on social inclusion of marginalised and excluded communities in Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
• To strengthen graduate programmes in Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania by enhancing participation in the taught graduate (MSW/MA) and PhD programmes at the southern universities (Makerere University, University of Rwanda and ISW, Dar es Salaam).
• To strengthen North-South and South-South cooperation by promoting staff and student exchanges, joint supervision and research/publications between Makerere University, the Institute of Social Work, the University of Rwanda and the University of Agder.
• To strengthen fieldwork placements in social work education in rural and low-income urban settings in order to enhance the inclusivity of social work education.
• To underpin and reinforce social and behavioral change and maximize impact through the development and continuous update of the project’s central Communication, Community Engagement and Visibility Plan (CCV) Hub.
