Metochi Study Centre celebrates 30 years

This year marks 30 years since the monastery annex Metochi was put into use as a study centre for UiA. It will be recognised and celebrated with various events on Lesvos in June.

Illustration of Metochi

Since 1993, Metochi has been a study centre for UiA. Metochi is a monastery annex and part of the famous Limonos Monastery on the island of Lesvos in the Aegean Sea and was founded in the 16th century. In recent times, it was restored for study and course activities.

The 30th anniversary will be marked in June, in week 24. The programme for the week will be ready sometime in January, but here are some tasters:

  • On Thursday 15 and Friday 16 June, there will be an anniversary seminar on the topic: ‘Democracy and citizenship’. Contributors include Nina Burleigh, Georgios Tyrikos and Stian Bromark in addition to contributors from UiA and the University of the Aegean.
  • Saturday 18 June: Anniversary party with music and celebratory speeches, food and drink.

Several joint excursions, hikes, exhibitions, and book presentations will also be offered during the anniversary week.

Practical info

There is a limited number of places at Metochi, but we can suggest alternative accommodation. All events and meals at the events are included, travel and accommodation expenses are covered by the individual.

Apollo flies directly from Oslo to Mytilene (MJT) on Sundays. There are also daily scheduled flights from Athens. Here you will find more information about travel to Metochi.

For information and registration, please contact Kari Grødum.

We warmly welcome everyone to the celebration. Look out for updates on the event page.
