Nettskjema is a tool for online data collection, for both staff and students. The solution is flexible and can be used both for surveys and larger data collections. Nettskjema is a secure solution provided by the University of Oslo (UiO). There are also mobile apps for recording audio and image (Nettskjema-Diktafon and Nettskjema Bilde).
Secure solution for online data collection
Questionnaires, registrations and multiple-choice assignments
Handles large amounts of data and data from mobile apps

Security and data protection
Information security is of critical importance. For research involving the collection and processing of sensitive data, Nettskjema must be integrated with Service for Sensitive Data (TSD). This means that forms are encrypted and kept in secure storage in TSD.
Nettskjema can deliver data directly into a project in TSD:
Create a form in Nettskjema. See the section below ‘Get started with Nettskjema’ if you are unsure how to create a form in Nettskjema.
Criteria for a form to be activated for TSD are as follows:
The person activating the form must have a valid user account for the TSD project for which the form is activated.
The form must be set up as a ‘Questionnaire for sensitive data’ when it is created. If not, the form type can be changed under the settings tab.
The design of the form must be completed before activation since the form is automatically locked for editing once the activation for TSD is done and the first response has been received.
The form must have a completed codebook (Norwegian only) without blank fields.
Test responses delivered to the form before activation must have been deleted. This can be done under the tab ‘See results’.
This is how you activate Nettskjema for TSD:
Make sure you have your TSD username, password and single-use code for activation ready. Open the form you want to activate in Nettskjema and choose ‘Connect’ in the red field below the title ‘Questionnaire for sensitive data’.
You will then be requested to confirm the rights - that is who is authorised to respond to the form - choose ‘Next’ - type in your TSD username, password and single-use code and choose ‘Connect’.
You will receive a message on screen that the form is ready.
It is important to send a test response after activation has been completed and log in to the TSD project to make sure the responses are collected. If it is the first time you send a response to this project (a new TSD project), we recommend that you ask TSD technical support to help you install TSD Data Loader which makes it easier to see the responses in TSD.
Nettskjema dictaphone and image
Nettskjema diktafon
Nettskjema diktafon is an app for recording audio using a smartphone or tablet. The audio files are sent to Nettskjema. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or App Store.
If you collect research data that is eligible for storage in TSD, set up the app to deliver the responses directly into TSD.
Tips:
Always test your form in Nettskjema before using it for data collection and make sure it works satisfactorily.
There is a general limit of 45 minutes per recording.
To bypass the maximum recording limit of 45 minutes, you can add a question to Nettskjema that has the value ‘respondent id’. That will give you the opportunity to make 2-hour recordings. See how under the section ‘Recording length’.
It is a good idea to put your phone on flight mode before you start, to avoid interruptions to your recording.
Nettskjema bilde
Nettskjema bilde is an app that allows respondents to take pictures with their phone (or select images from the camera roll). It can also be used as a regular form-app without the respondent taking pictures.
The app is called Nettskjema bilde and can be downloaded from Google Play or App Store.
It may be good to create a short URL to the form as it is easier for the respondent to use. Like for example ‘studyapp’. That becomes the label the respondent enters in the app.
Select ‘Log in with Feide’ and log in with your UiA username and password.
Creating forms
Select ‘+ Create new form’ and type a ‘Form title’ and select the ‘Form type’, ‘Form language’ and ‘Who may answer the form’ and click ‘Next page’.
You will then be asked to state whether you want to collect respondent information and whether the form collects personal data.
The answers to these questions will determine what the next steps are.
After going through all the steps, click ‘Create’.
You can now start building the form using the various elements on the left side. Click the element you want to use and fill in the required data. Remember to save before exiting Nettskjema.
Further information about creating online forms through Nettskjema can be found on UiO's website.
