Katja Hakel

Associate Professor

Associate Professor in Educational Development

Katja Hakel is an associate professor in educational development. She has been working on enhancing the competence of faculty in Norwegian higher education since 2013, initially at NTNU and since February 2024 at UiA. At NTNU, she has developed and researched the training and use of teaching assistants, as well as taught and mentored faculty in educational development work. Her interests in teaching and research lie within Universal Design for Learning, and the associate professor (førstelektor) - full professor (dosent) promotion as an equitable career path in academia. She has been a member of the leadership group of the international network Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education (UDLHE) and chaired the international peer-reviewed conference Digicon. In 2022-2023, she was on a research stay at the University of Kansas, USA. In Norway, she has researched the promotion of associate professors and contributed nationally to the teaching and mentoring of associate professor candidates from many higher education institutions. At UiA, she leads the associate professor program and is the head of the excellent teaching practitioner scheme. In 2022, she was awarded the status of excellent teaching practitioner at NTNU herself.

Courses and teaching

Job responsibilities:

  • Leader of the qualification program for associate professorship (førstelektor) and full professorship (dosent) at UiA
  • Chairperson of the excellent teaching practitioner committee at UiA
  • Mentoring of faculty regarding educational research and development at the Center for Vocational Education and Training in Working Life (SYA)
  • Teaching courses on study program management at UiA
  • Teaching, mentoring, and research on universal design for learning, teaching, and assessment (Universal Design for Learning)
  • Member of UiA-representation in the FORTHEM alliance, work package 5 Innovative Pedagogies
