Javel! Diversity week at UiA (online)

Javel! Diversity Week will be organised at UiA in week three. The week is a collaboration between students and staff and consists of a number of events spread throughout the week.

Since we are in a special situation where it is difficult to meet in person, we believe it is particularly important to organise Diversity Week at UiA this year. To make sure it is safe and inclusive, all the events will be online.

A good learning environment requires both academic and social development. The University of Agder strives to be a non-discriminatory university and wants everyone to feel included and welcome as employees and students. Through Javel! Diversity Week, we want to contribute to this and show that we are an inclusive and diverse university.

If you are new to Southern Norway, you may be wondering why the diversity week is called ‘Javel!’. It is a positive-sounding word, similar to ‘All right!’, and in this part of the country, the word is used as a greeting. An encounter between two locals might go something like this:

Local southerner 1: All right! (Javel!)

Local southerner 2: All right, there you go! (Javel, se det!)

• Monday 18 January: How to be different - mindset and tools. Organiser: UiA Faculty of Engineering and Science. Online seminar in English.
• Monday 18 January: LGBTQ students’ everyday life with Dorian Norheim. Organiser: Queer Students at Agder and Competency unit for gender and sexuality diversity at UiA. Online lecture in English.
• Tuesday 19 January: What is diversity at the university? Organiser: The Young Academy of Norway. Online panel discussion in English.
• Wednesday 20 January: Handling anxiety, stress and burnout with psychologist Maria Østhassel/@Psyktdeg. Organiser: Javel! Diversity Week and the Division of Human Resources at UiA. Online lecture in English.
• Wednesday 20 January: A couch conversation about identity with psychologist Sondre Risholm Liverød and professor Håvard Løkke. Organiser: Philosophia, Unikum and JAVEL Diversity Week. Live streaming in Norwegian.
• Thursday 21 January: Crash course in norm criticism - Why and how. Organiser: Centre for Gender and Equality at UiA. Online course in English.
